依稀记得在微博上第一次看到有关国内独立动画的新闻时，我和朋友惊叹与此同时，在中国的电视台依然充斥着诸如“雷锋的故事”这样投入极高，然智商和艺术含量都到达一定限度的动画片。我说的限度，是低得可以的意思。我小时候所见的优秀国产动画消失不见；我说的不只是技艺，我说的是那种打动人心的力量。
I still remember how when me and a friend for the first time checked out the latest work of some indie animation filmmaker's, we were somehow shocked to find out the stated-funded, high
-profile animation TV series such like "the Story of Leifeng" could be so unabashedly moronic and artistically meaningless. (Leifeng was once the role-model soldier of the whole Nation set up by the Party-state in the 60's for his golden hearted deeds to help the others). "Made in China" animations we used to follow throughout our childhood were simply gone. What we are missing, is not just the nostalgic stylized techniques(such as Chinese brush painting)--I know with considerable budget you could always make up for that, what I mean, is the sincerity and originality to tell stories that'd be enjoyed by all.

或许，在中国，动画片作为一种非常具有想象力的艺术形式，其可能性在普通公
众可见的范围内，被大大低估并且类型化了。流行的国产动画片除了娱乐精神，缺乏更深层次的价值。有人提出美国迪斯尼\皮克斯，有人说，看日本动漫，我在想，中国独立动画是否能够赋予所谓“中国动画”一个崭新而具活力的定义？
I speculate that, as one potentially original genre, the art of animation has been considerably underestimated and stereotyped by the general public, as well as the mainstream culture within China. There's no intrinsic spirit to the current popular animation works, except being entertaining (which may be what we need...now). Some may say our future should refer to the Disney, Pixar or the Japanese Anime---I am arguing for the possibility that Chinese indie animation could render the "Made in China" animation refreshingly new visions and directions.
有想象力、个人风格鲜明的的动画大概从来都不缺，而且这些独立“作者”（请允许我在这里借用auteur的概念）在主流的视野中，他们被很大程度上忽略了。
We never lack personal vision and extraordinary voices in the animation filmmaking; just that these indie auteurs have been less talked about and paid attention to outside of the industry, if we do have one.
我们此次所选的有限的几部作品，它们或天马行空、五彩斑斓；但我以为，与其说它们只是艺术家沉溺于自己文艺理想乌托邦式的个人作品，不如说，它们从一个写意的层面反映出了年轻动画作者的精神世界。而这个世界，如一面迷镜，映出的，正是当下多样而复杂的中国现实。大概这正是关于其“独立”的意义所在
What we have picked up for this time's programme could be described as "imaginative" and "colorful"; but rather than considering them as highly personalized, self-indulging works only about the individual worlds of these animation filmmakers/artists, I suppose they have brought before our eyes the spiritual states of young Chinese of my generation's. I'd rather say they are confronting China's realities--realities of the society, or the reality of their own beings, in their own ways. Here lies the significance of "being independent".
[Wen Ling's 54 Boy]
我们这次的作者之一温凌最近出版了他的作品集54 BOY，据说有500个不同的封面；王珏买来一本送我做礼物。从北京飞回大阪的飞机上，我读得兴味盎然。温凌的插画世界似见不到他学习版画的“专业性”，然而对日常生活真实、细致而因此动人的记录，毫不掩饰他面对这个世界和自我的困惑、伤感，以及愤怒。
One of our filmmakers/visual artists Wen Ling has recently published his picture/photo book "54 Boy", which according to him has 500 different covers. Wang Jue bought me one of the 500 as a gift, which I read through on my flight from Beijing to Osaka, with concentration that was not usually seen on me when flying. In his illustrations full of clumsily shaped monsters and figures, it's hard to tell actually Wen graduated from the Department of Printmaking, Central Academy of Fine Arts. Nevertheless, Wen has documented his everyday life in a half-lighthearted detailed way; those seemingly cartoon characters are living through the realities, with much the same doubts, sentiments or even anger just like me or you.
